What is a VNG Test?

A VNG (Videonystagmography) test is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the balance system and inner ear. It helps doctors identify the cause of dizziness, vertigo, or balance disorders.

During the test, special goggles with cameras record your eye movements while you follow visual targets or change head positions. Because the inner ear and eyes are closely connected, abnormal eye movements can indicate problems in the vestibular (balance) system.

The test is non-invasive, painless, and typically takes about 30–60 minutes to complete.

Who needs a VNG test?

A VNG test is recommended for individuals who experience symptoms related to balance or dizziness.

You may need this test if you have frequent vertigo, lightheadedness, unsteadiness, or a feeling that the room is spinning.

Doctors often suggest a VNG test if you have unexplained falls, difficulty maintaining balance while walking, or persistent dizziness that affects daily activities.

It may also be advised if there is a suspicion of an inner ear (vestibular) disorder or certain neurological conditions.

This test is commonly used for individuals who are experiencing balance-related issues.

Are there any side effects?

You may feel temporary dizziness, nausea, or imbalance during or after the test, but these symptoms usually go away quickly. A VNG test is a safe and commonly used diagnostic procedure.
